KwaZulu-Natal : South Coast

The KwaZulu Natal South Coast offers a glorious coastline of 150km stretching from Amanzimtoti, south of Durban to Port Edward close to the Wild Coast. It’s a very
well developed holiday playground dotted with many
towns, containing excellent resorts,
hotels, and other accommodation options. Because of the warm weather, balmy Indian
Ocean, stretches of golden beaches,
this is an extremely popular family holiday
location offering the traveler or holiday
maker a host of exciting adventure and
recreational options. Some of the main towns and popular holiday resorts in the
area include Margate, Port Edward, San Lameer, Uvongo and Shelly Beach. Accommodation
options in these include luxury resorts and hotels, self catering apartments as
well as guest house and bed and breakfast amenities.
The South Coast is also known as the Golf Coast because of the comprehensive selection
of
golf courses in the area, especially around the bigger towns like Margate and
Port Shepstone. Within one hour leisurely drive from Margate there are no less than nine excellent 18-hole golf courses, two of which are rated in South Africa's top
12.
Swimming and sunbathing is a natural choice when it comes to leisure, with many
beautiful beaches and the invitingly warm Indian Ocean. There are Blue Flag beaches
at Hibberdene, Margate, San Lameer, and Ramsgate. This is however just one of the
many water based activities in the area. Scuba Diving is a very popular activity
with many excellent diving spots in the area. Aliwal Shoal is by far the most popular
diving site in the area and for the more adventurous, Protea Banks offers some of the best shark diving in the world. The area offers year-round viewing and spotting
of humpback whales, bottlenose, humpback and common dolphins.
One of the worlds most spectacular natural phenomena takes place every year during
June / July. This is the annual sardine run when billions of sardines’ migration
brings them close to shore, bringing the ocean to life with thousands of game fish,
sharks and birds who go on a feeding frenzy.
For those wanting some recreation and adventure away from the ocean, the South Coast
offers many exciting options including abseiling, gorge swinging and white river rafting. Because of its popularity as a
tourist and holiday destination, accommodation
is plentiful and usually of very high standard. Whether you are looking to stay
in a luxury hotel, intimate guest house, self catering apartment or resort or whether
you prefer to camp or bring your caravan, the South Coast offers accommodation options
to suit the need and pocket of almost every one.
